When most people think of a hospital chaplain, they picture someone quietly praying at a bedside or leading a short devotional. But our role is far richer and more complex. We are spiritual companions, counselors, moral supporters, and bridges between patients, families, and medical staff.
During my time volunteering in Brooklyn, I met a patient who was critically ill and afraid of what the future held.
He did not ask for answers. He wanted someone to listen. I sat with him in silence, holding his hand, reminding him he was not alone in his journey. That presence, more than words, brought comfort.
Hospital chaplains provide emotional and spiritual care for patients of all faiths and backgrounds. We counsel families facing difficult decisions. We offer prayers, rituals, or simply a listening ear. We also support medical staff dealing with stress and moral dilemmas.
Scripture Reflection:
“The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.” (Psalm 34:18)
