Families often arrive at the hospital overwhelmed, frightened, and uncertain. They may face decisions about life support, surgeries, or terminal care. As chaplains, we journey with them through the darkest hours.
I recall a family in a hospital in New York whose father was in intensive care after a severe stroke.
His children argued over what was best, each carrying guilt and fear. I met with them privately, helped them voice their concerns, and encouraged them to listen deeply to each other. Their peace did not come from answers but from being heard.
Being present in those moments requires patience, humility, and compassion. We do not rush to fix or solve. We create a space where emotions can be expressed without judgment.
Scripture Reflection:
“Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.” (Galatians 6:2)
